About

After earning my Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 2018, I've spent the past four and a half years working at Floodlight Design, a web design and development firm outside of Chicago. I've worked on projects for Chicagoland school districts, businesses, charities, religious institutions and upscale apartment complexes. I've also worked on websites for national brands such as Fairlife, and world renowned universities like MIT and Princeton.

Through this work I have acquired better time management skills, improved my communication with team members and clients, learned new programming languages and frameworks, and significantly improved my skills as a developer.

My strengths as a web developer are responsive sites, Bootstrap, PHP, HTML, CSS, SASS, JavaScript, jQuery, and Wordpress. I also have experience with React from working on personal projects. I'm a fast learner and my google skills are unmatched.

When I'm not working, I'm usually spending time with my wife and our two dogs, visiting friends, watching movies and TV, or whipping up something tasty in the kitchen!

Professional Work

Darkroom Faith

A crowdfunded Christian web series aimed at teenagers. Helping them tackle difficult questions about love, life, doubt and faith.

This is probably my favorite site I've worked on so far. I got to develop this site by myself (which is always a fun challenge), and Darkroom really let our design partners get creative. There are unique styles and animations throughout the site, and the entire thing feels very cool. Some of my favorite parts of the site are the initial animation on the home page, the navigation animation, and the character bios on the episode pages.

Floodlight 15

Floodlight Design's 15 year anniversary promotional microsite

I got to collaborate on Floodlight's 15 year anniversary site with two of Floodlight Design's other developers. My primary contribution to the project was "Floodle", a Wordle-style game with answers related to Floodlight Design and web development. This was a really fun project to work on. I had never tried to make a game before, and there were some novel challenges to overcome.

Cloudflare Stream Plugin

An internal Wordpress plugin utilizing the Cloudflare Stream platform for playing client videos

For most purposes, YouTube and Vimeo's video players work really well. However, at Floodlight our clients often wanted features that required some hacky CSS or digging through YouTube/Vimeo's API in order to achieve. So instead, we created our own solution. Using Cloudflare's Stream platform for video hosting, we created an internal plugin that allowed our clients to upload videos from within Wordpress. It gave us the ability to generate thumbnails from the video that appear while the video is loading and hide when it's ready, creating a more graceful transition once the page loads. Hiding controls, autoplay, looping and muting can be set per instance and on initialization, giving us a lot of flexibility and making the process easier for the client. The lack of YouTube/Vimeo branding on videos was also a big plus. The homepage video on Darkroom Faith, which I've linked below, is one of my favorite use cases of the plugin.

Trailhead 606

A luxury apartment building located in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood

Trailhead is another favorite site of mine. The bold, bright colors and simple yet satisfying load in animations and hover effects all come together in a way I'm really proud of. But the most unique feature of this site is it's 'Neighborhood' page. On it, you'll find a map of nearby attractions, restaurants, transportation and shopping options. You can select a category you'd like to see, and both the map and list update dynamically. It's a great tool for getting a sense of the amenities near the apartment building.

React Checkers

A fully playable checkers game built with React

I had the idea to make checkers after finishing the official React tutorial in which you make a tic-tac-toe game. I wanted to build something that was more difficult and would really test my understanding of React. Checkers let me build on the foundations I learned making tic-tac-toe while challenging me to think outside of the box and use JavaScript in ways I never had before.

Digital Cookbook Library

A digital library of the recipes from my cookbooks

I woke up early one Sunday morning really craving a bowl of tomato soup and grilled cheese. I was pretty sure I had a tomato soup recipe in one of my cookbooks, but I had no idea which one. I remember thinking that it would be so much easier if I had digital copies of all of my cookbooks. Then I could search for it and find the recipe with ease. I realized that with my home scanner and some OCR software I could just do it myself. So later that afternoon I sat down (tomato soup and grilled cheese in hand), found a free OCR API, and got to work.
